autonomous eVs
sent to Coventry
|
With
a passenger capacity in excess of 50, a
trio of Optare Versa EV’s, now in
service with Travel De Courcey in Coventry,
are the largest battery-powered electric
buses on Britain’s roads.
The buses were handed over to Travel De Courcey by Optare Sales Director, John Horn in Coventry on Wednesday 13 June 2012. Running between the War Memorial Park and the city centre, the three electric buses provide the Park and Ride service for Coventry every 15 minutes. The advances in battery technology means the ultra modern vehicles can be fully recharged in around an hour, whereas previous, similar vehicles would've taken 5-6 hours. |

Scene in the USA.

Despite its love affair with the 'gas guzzler' the USA has a good track record for experimenting with and implementing electric mass transport vehicles. An online search for electric buses USA will bring up some interesting links for the curious.
Proterra was founded in 2004 to build the "bus of tomorrow." And with the help of the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration, the company has succeeded in creating an electric bus that can be recharged in under ten minutes.
But Proterra is doing more than just creating a greener, cleaner mode of transportation; it's creating jobs and boosting economic development in Greenville, South Carolina. |
Jay Leno's Garage: Proterra Ecoliner Electric Bus.
Will this vehicle revolutionize mass transit? It incorporates elements of Formula 1, naval and tank technology, but the most important thing about this bus is the rapid charger on its roof, which means it can run 24 hours a day, seven days a week!
The video shows the main features of the Ecoliner bus and highlights the technology used which will allow it to operate round the clock if needed. There is also video of the vehicle on the road; some from other videos. There is a typical petrol-head's remark from Jay Leno that "Yes, we need more EVs then petrol-heads need not feel guilty driving the gas guzzlers!" |
