Blackpool Tramway
In the 1950s, the tram disappeared from the streets of Britain's towns and cities, it seemed at the time, almost overnight, a system that had been in place since it replaced the horse drawn tram in Victorian times was no more! Well almost; Blackpool kept its tram system.
The Blackpool tramway runs from Blackpool to Fleetwood on the Fylde Coast in Lancashire, England. It was the last surviving first-generation tramway in the United Kingdom until replaced by a fleet of modern Flexity 2 'Supertrams' in 2012.
Blackpool was farsighted enough to realise the heritage value of its trams and their role as a source of tourist revenue. Alongside the modern trams they still operate original trams both their own and vehicles sourced from other now defunct tramways. More information on Blackpool trams can be found on the Blackpool Tram Blog.
