a revolutionary chassis design by James Parker, and cutting edge industrial design by Tim Prentice of Motonium Design, the Mission R is powerful, intelligent and downright fierce.
MotoGP-spec components from Öhlins, Brembo, and Marchesini round out this built-for-racing package. The heart of the Mission R is an advanced MissionEVT powertrain that packs 141hp and 14.4 kWh of energy storage in a package smaller than a 600cc sportbike. The liquid-cooled AC Induction motor produces 115 ft. lbs. of torque the moment the rider cracks the throttle, rocketing the bike from a standstill to over 160 mph in one gear. Power is managed by the MissionEVT 100kW motor controller, with customizable regenerative braking maps, throttle maps and more. All vehicle and ride data is accessible via WiFi or 3G connections. Putting our superbike technology on the track is the ultimate R&D testbed. The Mission R was built to race, and everything we learn from racing is applied to our street superbikes and our MissionEVT powertrains. Feb 2011 |

Compared to their gasoline counterparts, electric motors have near-instant torque and linear power delivery, both important qualities when pushing a motorcycle to the limits of grip. Motherboard got to see just how effective the electric RS could be when they were given a demo by a former pro racer around a private race track in upstate New York.
Given the slow growth of the electric vehicle market and charging infrastructure—can high-end electric vehicles break the stalemate? That's been Tesla's plan, with a goal of not just building electric cars, but better cars. Mission's plan is similar—build the best electric bike possible, and those that can afford it won't have to worry about compromises. For EV builders, it's important to prove to the market that electric vehicles can compete, something the RS does well. But the huge question is when the technology will trickle down to cheaper models and more potential buyers. Oct 2013 |
